Section 501 Visa Cancellation revoked at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

Our practice works alongside a network of barristers in assisting some of Australia’s most vulnerable people at all stages during their migration matters. From Visa applications, cancellations, permanent residency, citizenship, and merit reviews across the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and the Federal and Circuit Court.

With the recent conflict in Sudan creating issues in the wider region, the firm feels it is most timely to share a recent decision in the Administrative Appeal Tribunal whereby a client of ours was facing a visa cancellation on character issues. Our client, whom we will refer to as Mr G, had his visa mandatorily cancelled and was facing the prospect of either indefinite detention or deportation to South Sudan.

In collaboration with barrister Evelyn Tadros, Selba Gondoza-Luka of Afri-Aus Care, psychologist Dr Gina Cidoni, Refugee Legal and a team of volunteers, Ajak & Associates were able to assist Mr G in having the Tribunal revoke the cancellation of his Class XB Subclass 200 Refugee visa, allowing him to be released from detention. The work included trips to the family home to assist Ms Luka to arrange support services for Mr G. He now remains in the community with the support of his family and friends and avoids the danger of being sent back to a country where would face harm or destitution.

Pro Bono work of this nature is important to Ajak & Associates with the personal history some of the team have as refugees themselves. The firm hopes to continue such a positive trajectory in assisting with migration matters by being a bridge between the immigrant community and the law.
